Squad swimming

Swimming to win – be it for your health or sporting achievement.
The Importance of Early Training for Swimmers

Did you know that mitochondrial density (the energy creators of your cells) develops more rapidly before puberty? High mitochondrial density is crucial for top athletic performance post-puberty. This means young bodies adapt to training better than adults, making early training essential.

What Does This Mean for Your Swimmer?

Pre-pubescent athletes have fewer negative reactions to aerobic training compared to post-pubescent athletes. Protecting children from "burnout" can actually hinder their long-term athletic development. It's easier to learn proper techniques early rather than correcting bad habits later.

The Aquatic Academy's Programs

We offer three squad levels based on the swimmer's ability and competition goals, ranging from novice to international events. Our swimmers have set numerous records and compete in a variety of championships, including age group and national events.

High Performance and Training Philosophy

Our High Performance Squad follows the teachings of John Leonard from the American Swimming Coach’s Association (ASCA). Key principles include:

- Show up!
- Honour your teammates with your effort.
- Do it right the first time!

These principles guide our training and help swimmers strive for perfection through consistent practice.

Training Commitments

- **Baby Squad (Guppies)**: 2-3 hours per week (less time than other activities like ballet or soccer).
- **Provincial Selection**: Starts from the 10 and under age group. Early training helps build the necessary mitochondrial density for future success.

Developing a competitive swimmer typically takes at least a year of steady, consistent training.

Competition and Confidence

Our swimmers are registered with ESP Piranha Aquatics, and competition at all levels is vital for motivation. Fear of failure can be a significant burden. Children need to set personal standards and compete with themselves, not others. Over-praising can create fear of disappointment, leading some children to avoid competition altogether. Building self-confidence early is crucial.

Perseverance Over Perfection

Success isn't just about being the top swimmer. It's about learning to persevere and never giving up. Quitting is not an option at the Aquatic Academy.

Start early, train consistently, and help your child become a confident, competitive swimmer!
